Description
Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) is an Art Deco statue of Jesus Christ created by French sculptor Paul Landowski and built by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa. Located at the peak of the 700-meter Corcovado mountain overlooking Rio de Janeiro, the statue stands 30 meters tall, not including its 8-meter pedestal. Completed in 1931, it is made of reinforced concrete and covered in a mosaic of thousands of triangular soapstone tiles. Soapstone was chosen for its durability and resistance to extreme weather. The statue's arms stretch 28 meters wide, acting as a symbol of peace and welcoming. Because of its prominent position, the statue is frequently struck by lightning; in 2014, a major bolt chipped the tip of the statue's thumb, necessitating a specialized repair. It was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.
