Description
Italy is a boot-shaped peninsula in Southern Europe, extending into the central Mediterranean Sea. It is bordered by France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia to the north, along the Alps. Its capital, Rome, is a major historical and cultural hub. Within Italy's borders are two tiny independent states: Vatican City and San Marino. Italy is home to the only active volcanoes in mainland Europe, including Vesuvius and Etna. The country is geographically diverse, featuring the rugged Apennine Mountains running down the center, the fertile Po Valley in the north, and beautiful coastal regions. Italy also includes the large islands of Sicily and Sardinia. The climate is predominantly Mediterranean, though the north can be quite cold and snowy in winter. Italy has more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any other country, reflecting its deep history from the Roman Empire to the Renaissance. It is also famous for its cuisine, fashion, and luxury automobile industry.
