Country
Lesotho / San Marino / Vatican City
Description
An 'enclave' is a country entirely surrounded by the territory of another single country. There are only three such nations in the world. We have already mentioned Vatican City and San Marino, both of which are surrounded by Italy. The third, and the only one located outside of Europe, is Lesotho. Known as the 'Kingdom in the Sky,' Lesotho is entirely surrounded by South Africa. It is also the only independent state in the world that lies entirely above 1,000 meters (3,281 feet) in elevation. Because it is landlocked and enclaved, Lesotho is heavily dependent on South Africa for trade and access to the global market, yet it maintains a distinct culture and a proud monarchy.
