Description
Frank McNamara co-founded the Diners Club, the first independent credit card company, after he forgot his wallet at a restaurant. Unlike previous 'charge plates' tied to a single store, the Diners Club card could be used at many different establishments. This invention decoupled the act of purchasing from the physical possession of cash. It was followed by the launch of the first revolving credit card by Bank of America (later Visa) and the Interbank Card Association (later Mastercard). The credit card fundamentally changed global consumer behavior, enabling the growth of the travel and entertainment industries and eventually becoming the backbone of e-commerce. It created a global system of instant credit and identity verification that redefined the concept of money.
