The London Tube as Air Raid Shelters

Description
During 'The Blitz,' when Germany bombed London for 57 consecutive nights, thousands of Londoners used the Underground (Tube) stations as deep-level air raid shelters. Initially, the government discouraged this, fearing people wouldn't leave, but public pressure forced them to install bunks, chemical toilets, and even libraries. At the peak of the bombings, up to 150,000 people slept on the platforms every night. This experience created a unique 'Tube culture' and a sense of shared resilience among city dwellers, though it was often crowded, noisy, and unsanitary.
