Description
The Meuse-Argonne Offensive was the largest and deadliest operation in the history of the United States Army. Involving 1.2 million American soldiers as part of the wider 'Hundred Days Offensive,' the goal was to break the German Hindenburg Line and capture the rail hub at Sedan. Fought over rugged terrain and dense forest, the battle lasted 47 days until the Armistice. The Americans suffered over 120,000 casualties, including 26,000 dead. This massive pressure, combined with British and French successes, finally broke the will of the German military command. It was during this battle that Alvin York became a legend, single-handedly killing 25 German soldiers and capturing 132 others, earning him the Medal of Honor.
