Description
The Rwandan Genocide was a mass slaughter of the Tutsi minority and moderate Hutu by members of the Hutu majority government. Triggered by the assassination of President Juvénal Habyarimana, the genocide lasted approximately 100 days and resulted in the deaths of an estimated 500,000 to 1,000,000 people. The killings were characterized by their speed and brutality, often carried out by ordinary citizens using machetes, encouraged by state-sponsored radio broadcasts. The international community, including the United Nations, was heavily criticized for its failure to intervene and stop the violence despite warnings of an impending massacre. The genocide ended when the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) took control of the country. This tragic event remains a stark reminder of the consequences of ethnic hatred and the failure of global collective security mechanisms to protect vulnerable populations.
