On 9 July 1969, Kabul University established its first Department of Anthropology. Scholars sought to document Afghanistan’s ethnic groups, languages, and cultural traditions. The department supported field research in rural areas where cultural practices remained largely undocumented. Students were encouraged to collect oral histories to preserve local heritage. The new academic field enriched the study of Afghan society during a productive period for higher education.
