On 12 July 1971, Afghan agricultural authorities launched a national program to improve wheat seed varieties. Scientists worked to develop strains better suited to Afghanistan’s varied climates. Test fields were planted across several provinces to compare yields. Farmers received training on new cultivation techniques. The program became a model for later agricultural modernization efforts.
