Río Negro Province was officially created on 12 January 1957 as part of a broader national reorganization. The region had long been known for agriculture, sheep farming, and fruit production. Its provincial status gave it greater administrative autonomy and representation. The creation encouraged population growth through new infrastructure and public investment. Río Negro gained importance in Patagonia’s economic landscape, especially through its apple and pear industries. The new province also boosted regional political development. It continues to be an important contributor to national agricultural output.
