San Salvador de Jujuy was founded on 11 January 1593 by Francisco de Argañarás y Murguía. The settlement was established as a strategic outpost to secure Spanish control in the northwest. Its location connected important trade and communication routes to Upper Peru. Early settlers built fortifications, homes, and markets that supported steady growth. The city played a key role during Argentina’s independence campaigns. Its founding marked an important territorial expansion for the colonial administration. Over the centuries, it developed into a major regional center.
