Margarida Maria Alves, a prominent Brazilian rural worker, union leader, and defender of workers’ and human rights, was assassinated in front of her home in Alagoa Grande, Paraíba. She had been a vocal advocate for rural laborers and was one of the first women to hold a leadership position in the union movement in Brazil. Her activism focused on defending the rights of agricultural workers, including better labor conditions and legal protections, during a period of ongoing repression and conflict over land and labor rights.
