Chaya Pinkhasivna Lispector was born in Ukraine. She arrived in Brazil as an infant and became a towering figure of Modernism. She broke away from traditional regionalism to focus on interior monologues and the "stream of consciousness". She is often compared to James Joyce and Virginia Woolf.
