Brazil enacted Law No. 6,815/1980, known as the Estatuto do Estrangeiro. The law defined the legal status of foreigners in Brazil, including rules on entry, stay, and exit. It also created the National Immigration Council (Conselho Nacional de Imigração). This statute shaped Brazil’s immigration governance for decades and was later replaced by a newer migration law in 2017.
