The Brazilian cargo ship Arará was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-507 off the coast of Bahia. Historical accounts note that Arará was attacked while it was taking aboard survivors from Itagiba, which had been sunk earlier the same day in the same area. The strike caused a major explosion and heavy loss of life, including crew members and some rescued survivors who were already on board. The sinking of Arará was the final ship lost in the well-documented U-507 sequence against Brazilian vessels on 16–17 August 1942.
