By April 1, 1964, Brazil’s armed forces had consolidated control following the coup initiated the previous day. Civilian leaders were removed from power. Congress was pressured to legitimize military authority. Political rights were suspended for many officials. The military established a provisional government. This marked the effective start of authoritarian rule.
