On January 3, 1977, legislation approving the division of Mato Grosso was enacted. The decision created the new state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The split aimed to improve regional administration and development. Campo Grande was designated the capital. The change reflected population growth and economic expansion. Statehood officially took effect later that year.
