While the decree was signed in October, the Cruzeiro (Cr$) officially began its first day of circulation as the national currency on November 1. It replaced the old real (réis) at a rate of 1 cruzeiro for 1,000 réis (1$000). This first cruzeiro, often referred to as "cruzeiro antigo," circulated until 1967.
