The revolutionary leader and writer Carlos Marighella was killed in an ambush by the political police (DOPS). He was shot during an ambush in São Paulo, organized by police deputy Sérgio Paranhos Fleury. This was part of the military dictatorship's effort to eliminate leftist opposition.
