Luís Gálvez Rodríguez de Arias proclaimed the First Republic of Acre in a territory then controlled by Bolivia. The declaration was driven by Brazilian settlers living in the region during the rubber boom. Gálvez sought to separate Acre from Bolivia and align it politically with Brazil. He established a provisional government and renamed the capital Cidade do Acre. The republic existed only briefly due to political instability and external pressure. Although short-lived, the declaration intensified diplomatic tensions in the region. It contributed to events that eventually led to Acre’s incorporation into Brazil in 1903.
