Government forces retook control of the city of São Paulo, bringing an end to the 1924 Revolt. The uprising had lasted 23 days and involved rebel soldiers and army dissidents opposing the federal government. It was the largest urban military conflict in Brazilian history up to that point. Fighting caused extensive destruction in the city and resulted in more than 500 deaths and thousands of injuries. The rebels withdrew after heavy bombardment by government forces loyal to President Artur Bernardes. Although the government regained control, rebel leaders continued resistance elsewhere. Their retreat later contributed to the formation of the historic Prestes Column.
