The first major funk event known as Baile da Pesada was held at the Canecão venue in Rio de Janeiro. Organized by DJ Big Boy and Ademir Lemos. The event introduced funk, soul, and Black American musical influences to Brazilian youth culture. It attracted large crowds and marked the early formation of what would become Brazilian funk music. Over time, it influenced the rise of funk carioca in Brazil’s peripheral communities. July 12 later became associated with celebrations of funk culture in Brazil.
