On January 2, 1532, São Vicente was officially founded by Martim Afonso de Sousa. It became the first permanent Portuguese settlement in Brazil. The town served as a base for colonial administration and expansion. São Vicente played a central role in early sugar production. Its establishment marked the beginning of organized European colonization. The city remains historically significant today.
