The settlement that would become the city of Campo Grande was officially founded in what is now the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The founding is traditionally attributed to José Antônio Pereira, who established the settlement after migrating from Minas Gerais. Campo Grande developed at a strategic crossroads linking cattle-raising regions and interior trade routes. Over time, it grew rapidly due to agriculture, livestock, and later railway connections.
