Description

The law declared free the children born to enslaved women from the date of the law. It has also set rules for custody and obligations that often kept those children under the control of enslavers or the state. It included provisions about enslaved people owned by the nation and other related measures. The act represented a major “gradualist” step in Brazil’s slow legal dismantling of slavery during the Empire.
