Description

Brazil enacted the Law of 20 October 1823, declaring certain earlier legislation to remain in force after independence. The law stated that the legislation governing Brazil up to 25 April 1821 would continue to apply, along with later laws issued under Dom Pedro’s authority. This helped stabilize legal administration during the early Empire period. It clarified what legal rules should be treated as valid while new Brazilian institutions were being formed.
