Description

On July 2, 1823, Brazilian forces expelled Portuguese troops from Salvador, securing Bahia’s independence. The victory followed months of military confrontation during Brazil’s War of Independence. Portuguese resistance collapsed after blockades and sustained pressure. This event confirmed Brazilian sovereignty in northeastern Brazil. July 2 is considered more decisive locally than the national independence declaration of 1822. It remains a major regional holiday in Bahia.
