President Getúlio Vargas executed a self-coup, establishing the Estado Novo (New State) dictatorship. Vargas canceled the upcoming 1938 elections, dissolved the National Congress, and abolished all political parties. On the same day, a new, authoritarian constitution was promulgated to centralize total power in the executive branch.
