Brazil enacted a law creating a Justice of the Peace (Juiz de Paz) and a substitute in each parish and certain local chapels. The law helped structure local justice and conflict resolution at the community level. It supported a more organized legal presence outside major urban centers. The measure defined local judicial roles while the country was still shaping its post-independence state structure.
