Ranieri Mazzilli, then President of the Chamber of Deputies, assumed the presidency of Brazil on an interim basis following the resignation of Jânio Quadros. Under Brazil’s constitutional rules, Mazzilli became acting president because Vice President João Goulart was outside the country. His assumption of office was intended as a temporary solution while political leaders and the military debated whether Goulart should be allowed to take power.
