On January 4, 1763, Rio de Janeiro officially became the capital of colonial Brazil. The move shifted power from Salvador. Rio’s location supported gold trade and Atlantic defense. The city grew rapidly as an administrative center. This decision reshaped Brazil’s political geography. Rio remained the capital until 1960.
