An assassination attempt targeted journalist and politician Carlos Lacerda outside his home at Rua Tonelero, in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. The attack occurred shortly after midnight and involved gunfire directed at Lacerda as he arrived with companions. Lacerda was wounded (notably in the foot), while Brazilian Air Force Major Rubens Florentino Vaz, who was accompanying him, was shot and died from his injuries. A municipal guard, Sálvio Romeiro, was also wounded during the incident.
