July 9 marks the official beginning of the Constitutionalist Revolution of 1932 and is commemorated annually in São Paulo. The revolt sought to restore democratic governance and demand a new national constitution. Thousands of civilians and soldiers joined the movement in opposition to Getúlio Vargas’s provisional government. Although defeated after several months of fighting, the uprising left a lasting political legacy. Public pressure from the movement contributed to the promulgation of the 1934 Constitution. The date is now a public holiday in São Paulo state.
