Description

Named after Diogo Antônio Feijó, the legislation prohibited the trafficking of enslaved Africans into Brazil. This also declared all enslaved people entering the country from that date forward to be free. The law set rules meant to stop the illegal international slave trade into Brazilian territory and ports. In practice, the law was often poorly enforced, but it became a major legal reference in later anti-slavery debates.
