The city of Vitória was founded on an island in what is now the state of Espírito Santo by Portuguese colonists led by Duarte de Lemos. The relocation from the earlier settlement of Vila Velha was motivated by defensive concerns against Indigenous resistance and foreign attacks. Vitória later became the capital of Espírito Santo and developed into a key port and administrative center.
