Description

The Act of Union was proclaimed in Montreal. It united Upper Canada and Lower Canada into a single colony called the Province of Canada. The change followed the rebellions of 1837–38 and the Durham Report’s recommendations. The new political structure aimed to streamline governance, but it also created long-term tensions, especially around language and representation. The union shaped Canadian political development in the decades leading to Confederation in 1867.
