Patrick James Whelan was executed by hanging in Ottawa. He had been convicted for the assassination of MP Thomas D’Arcy McGee, who was shot in April 1868. Whelan maintained his innocence through his trial and up to his execution. The case drew huge public attention in Canada at the time, including large crowds at the execution. The McGee assassination remains the only assassination of a federal politician in Canadian history.
