Description

The Battle of Batoche was fought May 9–12, 1885, and ended on May 12 with a Canadian government victory at Batoche (in present-day Saskatchewan). It was the last major and decisive battle of the North-West Resistance/Rebellion, breaking the core Métis military position. The Métis forces were led by Louis Riel and Gabriel Dumont. The Canadian militia was led by Major-General Frederick D. Middleton, whose larger force eventually overwhelmed the defenders. After the defeat, Riel surrendered, and the collapse of the provisional government followed soon after.
