Description

Vincent Massey was installed as the first Canadian-born Governor General of Canada on February 1952. Appointed by King George VI, he served in the role from February 28, 1952, to September 15, 1959. This represented a major shift toward Canadian autonomy. He was the first Canadian-born person to hold this prestigious role, which had previously been held only by British individuals.
