Description

Frederick Seymour was appointed governor of the mainland Colony of British Columbia. The appointment came during a period when Britain was managing two separate west-coast colonies (Vancouver Island and British Columbia) with strong rivalry between them. Seymour’s governorship shaped policy during the later gold-rush era and the colony’s financial and administrative struggles. He later played a role in the move toward uniting the colonies, which happened in 1866.
