Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve (often described as Montréal’s founder) carried and erected a wooden cross on Mount Royal. The act is commonly explained as fulfilling a vow of thanks for the settlement’s survival during flooding threats. It later inspired the tradition memorialized by the Mount Royal Cross associated with Montréal’s history.
