On June 23, 1939, Congress created the Coast Guard Auxiliary. The volunteer organization assists with boating safety, patrols, and public education. It expanded the reach of the Coast Guard without increasing costs dramatically. During World War II, members supported coastal patrols and rescue operations. Today, the Auxiliary plays a vital role in maritime safety. Its volunteers continue to serve communities nationwide.
