Description

On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, authorizing the forced relocation and internment of over 120,000 Japanese Americans from the West Coast. The order followed the attack on Pearl Harbor and reflected wartime fear and racism. Families were sent to remote camps for years under harsh conditions. The policy was later recognized as a grave violation of civil liberties. In 1988, Congress formally apologized and offered reparations to survivors.
