On July 26, 1908, the Federal Bureau of Investigation was created as the Bureau of Investigation. It began with a small group of detectives and accountants. The agency expanded to address federal crimes, espionage, and organized crime. It became the FBI in 1935. Throughout the 20th century, the bureau played major roles in national security. The FBI is now one of the most influential law enforcement agencies in the world.
