On July 27, 1953, the Korean War armistice was signed at Panmunjom. It ended active fighting between North and South Korea. The agreement established the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Although fighting stopped, no formal peace treaty was ever signed. The armistice stabilized the region but left long-term tensions. U.S. forces continued to play a major role in Korean security.
