Description

On September 26, 1789, President George Washington appointed Thomas Jefferson as the first United States Secretary of State. Jefferson, then serving as minister to France, would soon return to take up the position. As Secretary of State, he managed diplomatic relations and advised Washington on foreign policy. His tenure also included sharp disagreements with Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton over the direction of the new republic. These debates contributed to the formation of the first political parties in the United States.
