On February 21, 1965, civil rights leader Malcolm X was assassinated while speaking at the Audubon Ballroom in New York City. Three members of the Nation of Islam were later convicted for his murder. Malcolm X had been a powerful voice for Black pride and self-determination, and his death shocked the nation. His legacy continued to influence civil rights, Black Power, and cultural identity movements. The site of his assassination is now the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial Center.
