Description

On November 21, 1964, the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge opened to traffic, connecting Brooklyn and Staten Island in New York City. At the time, it was the world’s longest suspension bridge by main span. The bridge improved access to Staten Island and encouraged residential and commercial development there.

Construction required massive quantities of steel and concrete and involved thousands of workers. The bridge also became an iconic visual symbol, frequently featured in films and media. It later served as the traditional starting point of the New York City Marathon.
