The Battle of Alegre took place during the Paraguayan War in what is now Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Brazilian forces engaged Paraguayan naval units along the São Lourenço River near the town of Alegre. The clash occurred as Brazilian troops were transporting supplies through the region. Paraguayan vessels launched a surprise attack but were eventually repelled by Brazilian forces. The Brazilians succeeded in recapturing the steamer Jaurú, which had previously been seized by Paraguay. The battle resulted in a Brazilian victory. It formed part of Brazil’s broader military campaign against Paraguay during the War of the Triple Alliance.
