Description

The Brazilian federal government declared official national mourning for five days following the death of former President Washington Luís Pereira de Sousa. The decree states that mourning would apply throughout the country starting on that date, and it also determined that the funeral would be conducted at the nation’s expense with head-of-state honors. Washington Luís had been President of Brazil from 1926 to 1930 and was a central figure of the First Republic, later deposed in 1930.
